Luscious' Poems
Embracing Two Cultures
Finding Identity
Negativity, I see
Between Natives and Whites
To be equal, We fight
Writing about this, is hard for me
The conflicts, I read and see
We want to fit in
With our background, seems a sin
We want to be heard
This problem, to you, may sound absurd
Overwhelmed with anger
Some people want us to forget our culture
Like everyone else
We want to integrate, find our place
Society plays a role
Acceptance is our goal
White families adopt Native children
Whites questioning, again and again
Adopting is good
Don't get me wrong or misunderstood
I've been brought up in a good family
Adoption, for me, was good, you see
I am loved and cared for
I'm telling you, all this I pour
How you've been brought up is important
All your values come from your parents
Everyone wants to know where they came from
So don't take anything the wrong way, or we'll have a problem
Please adopt kids because you want to love them
Not to prove a point or you'll be damned!
Be proud to have them around
Or trouble, you'll be bound
Please open your eyes
Reach for us, when we cry
Hold us tight
For us, every day will be a little bright
Don't push us away
Or we'll be angry and we'll betray
Don't question your decision
We'll all go into a depression
Don't push us too hard
We'll just end up scarred
Why is there always a battle?
This issue is an important matter
Please don't stereotype
We'll find more, about you, to gripe
Take us for WHO we are
Not all of us, will end up on the street or in a bar
We have feelings too
Sometimes, we don't know what to say or do
Give us some guidance and direction
We'll work on it, as our mission
My biological family, I have no regrets
They were thinking of me, to do what is best
My identity
My future, positive, I see
I've said all that needs to be said
Knowledge is important, our minds are being fed
I hope you will see
Now go ponder this, I'll let you be
